“I dreamt of doing it from the time I started playing accordion at age 7 as I was brought up in a house where polka music filled the air whenever possible,” said Pilarz. Playing in a polka band was something that Pilarz had wanted to do beginning at a young age. The Dynatones original band name was the Casino’s but they changed their name due to a record contract signed with Bel-Aire records who already had a Casino’s band on their label. In 1969, Edward Pilarz started playing bass guitar with the Buffalo, NY based band, The Dynatones when he was 17 years old. This week, I will feature musicians who began playing in polka bands in the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. My goal was to converse with musicians who started playing in each decade beginning with the 1950s and going through the 2000s. Over the next two weeks, I will be featuring a few polka musicians, discussing their very first experience playing in a polka band. It’s always interesting and informative learning the personal history of polka musicians. Each musician has their own story and reason for when, why, and how they began playing polka music.
